International football: talking points from the latest friendlies

Argentina are in a mess, England should go for all-out attack and Kylian Mbappé’s heroics are papering over French cracks Before this game, Jorge Sampaoli had said that when it comes to the World Cup, Lionel Messi has a revolver pressed against his head. Far from removing it, on Tuesday night the Argentina manager and the rest of the team loaded it and took the safety off. Messi watched his team get taken to bits without him and it made for painful viewing, the pressure building: he didn’t even make it to the end, getting up and leaving before the final whistle. It may feel reductionist to make it all about Messi but it is unavoidable, not least because his manager does the same. There was something sad, almost needy, about the way Sampaoli insisted afterwards that Messi had shown his commitment by being with the team before the game, after the game and at half-time. It is during the game that they need him. Sid Lowe Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2...

Spain’s winning identity intact as they hit Argentina for six in friendly win

For a long time Spain lamented the fact that they were world champions of friendlies but not when it came to the actual tournaments, so there will be a reluctance to fall into the old, momentarily forgotten trap of reading too much into results such as this. The optimism will be inevitable, though, after their performances in Düsseldorf on Friday and against Argentina on Tuesday night – even if their opponents were without Lionel Messi, the one man who can often seem like the entire team. He watched from the stands as his team-mates were defeated 6-1 with a hat-trick from Isco and one each from Diego Costa, Thiago Alcântara and Iago Aspas. Matt Phillips goal gives Scotland morale-boosting win over Hungary

Matt Phillips kick-started Alex McLeish’s second Scotland reign as his first international goal sealed a 1-0 friendly victory over Hungary. The West Brom winger converted Ryan Fraser’s low cross in the 48th minute as he grew into his centre-forward role in McLeish’s second game in charge. Charlie Mulgrew also had a penalty saved as Scotland produced an encouraging performance in Budapest, although Allan McGregor was called on to make several good stops for the visitors. The Celtic defender Jack Hendry was also handed his Scotland debut. Hendry, a late call-up into the squad, was drafted into a three‑man central defence after Grant Hanley pulled out through injury following Scotland’s 1-0 defeat by Costa Rica. Romelu Lukaku at the double in Belgium’s win against Saudi Arabia

It is difficult to know what will worry Gareth Southgate most when he sits down to see how Belgium extended their unbeaten run to 16 matches with this thrashing of Saudi Arabia. All that can be said with any certainty is that England will need a smart tactical operation in order to combat Kevin De Bruyne’s vision, Eden Hazard’s jinking runs and Romelu Lukaku’s ruthlessness on 28 June. It was a slick demonstration of Belgium’s attacking brilliance and one that served as ominous proof of the threat that England’s Group G opponents will pose at the World Cup, although one source of encouragement for Southgate might be that Roberto Martínez’s side had a couple of loose moments in defence. • Manager concerned by ‘debatable’ decision late on • Dele Alli did not play due to injury niggle in training Gareth Southgate has expressed doubts over whether James Tarkowski’s challenge on Federico Chiesa should have been referred to the video assistant referee after Italy were belatedly awarded a penalty to clinch a draw three minutes from time. The German referee, Deniz Aytekin, considered his decision after viewing a rerun of the incident on a screen on the halfway line and awarded the spot‑kick much to England’s frustration. Raheem Sterling’s craft offers key for England to throw off the shackles | Barney Ronay

Gareth Southgate’s most pressing need at Wembley was for his players to show something in attack against Italy – and Sterling and Vardy were happy to oblige On Wembley Way before kick-off a louche, drowsy New Orleans‑style jazz band dressed in Three Lions shirts could be heard parping and tootling away, serenading the strolling crowds. At the time it seemed a slightly off‑key soundtrack to another outing for this guarded, orderly England team, like cutting the highlights of a chess match to the soundtrack to the Benny Hill show. Three hours later it was probably all for the best that England had failed to keep their sixth successive clean sheet on another mannered, quietly intriguing night for this doggedly constructed team. When it comes to recent England tournament performances it’s not actually the hope that kills you. It’s the lack of hope – closely followed by repeated confirmation that the initial lack of hope was based on sound hope-free judgment. Continue reading... fro...

World Cup stunning moments: Luis Suárez bites Giorgio Chiellini in 2014 | Nick Miller

Before the 2014 World Cup, Suárez had been on a PR campaign – but that lasted for about two hours of play in stifling Natal In the first half of Uruguay’s final group game against Italy at the 2014 World Cup, Luis Suárez launched a late, clumsy challenge on Andrea Pirlo, upending the playmaker with the subtlety of a man taking down a tree with a blunt axe. As Pirlo tumbled, a flailing forearm struck Suárez around the ear. Suárez, assuming the role of the wronged man, held his head, stared at Pirlo, looking hurt and shocked – shocked! – that anyone could do such a thing. Around 40 minutes later, the score still 0-0, Suárez did similar. But this time the catalyst was something more unusual. Add Giorgio Chiellini’s name to the list with Otman Bakkal and Branislav Ivanovic : for the third time in his career, Suárez had bitten an opponent during a match. Composed and confident Socceroos light years ahead of Norway shambles | John Davidson

They rode their luck at times but the performance against Colombia was of considerable merit Socceroos hold their own in goalless draw with Colombia The daggers were already out for Bert van Marwijk after an awful coaching debut against Norway in Oslo. With limited preparation time, the Socceroos were disjointed and listless in a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of a lower-ranked opponent. The Dutchman got several of his selections wrong and Australia appeared a side unsure of what to do against a predictable, old-fashioned side content to lump the ball long.
