Premier League: 10 things to look out for this weekend

Liverpool’s problems could worsen in the derby, Ranieri returns to the Bridge and Newcastle fans plan a walk-in protest Maybe the table never lies but it sure can mislead. Perhaps Liverpool are the second-best team in the Premier League at the moment but that does not mean they are very good. So far in the league they have been unbeaten and unconvincing. The main problem is their midfield , which lacks ingenuity and suffers from waning dynamism. Jürgen Klopp has not overhauled it swiftly enough, though at least he has started Xherdan Shaqiri in the last two leagues games to bring more inventiveness. But he deployed Jordan Henderson, James Milner and Gigi Wijnaldum for Wednesday’s lame Champions League defeat in Paris. Henderson is suspended for Sunday’s Merseyside derby so there’s no need for him to be dropped. But there’s a good case for sidelining Wijnaldum and even Milner to go with a midfield trio of Shaqiri, Naby Keïta and Fabinho. That would partly be an expression of faith in ...

Taylor has told the PFA he cannot recall using the alleged term when giving a talk almost a year ago. A spokesperson for the players’ union said: “Gordon firmly believes he didn’t say it and it is not language he would ever use. He has led in this area for 40 years and understands fully the sensitivities.” Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2E47EG8

Callum Hudson-Odoi scores first Chelsea goal in thrashing of 10-man PAOK

This was a mismatch from the start, one of those Europa League group games where Chelsea might have lapsed into a stroll and prevailed with just as much to spare, but it still had its moment to savour. The clock had ticked on to the hour-mark with PAOK heaving to repel another of the hosts’ attacks when Gary Cahill and Cesc Fàbregas retrieved possession, with the latter slipping Callum Hudson-Odoi free into space down the left. The teenager scuttled forward, Léo Matos backing off further with the forward’s every delicate touch, before effortlessly stroking away an early shot with the inside of his right foot. Both defender and goalkeeper had clearly anticipated the effort being angled towards the far post, only for the ball to fizz inside the near post as a startled Alexandros Paschalakis dived forlornly to his right. Aaron Ramsey scores in stroll against Vorskla as Arsenal win group

Arsenal secured top spot in their Europa League group as a much-changed side coasted to victory against Vorskla Poltava, whose manager then hit out at the decision to move the game to Kiev. Rangers hang on against Villarreal after red card for Daniel Candeias

Analysis of this game must always come with context of Rangers playing the second half with 10 men. Villarreal will be upset at departing with just a point, thereby not seizing on the opportunity given to them by Daniel Candeias’s dismissal. Their territorial dominance ultimately amounted to very little so Steven Gerrard retains a live hope of taking Rangers to the Europa League’s knockout phase in this, his first season as a manager. What Rangers lacked in quality, they made up for with belligerence. Manchester United activate one-year extension on David de Gea’s contract

• Spain goalkeeper now contracted until 2020 • Alexis Sánchez ruled out with hamstring injury David de Gea may well stay at Manchester United for at least another 18 months after the club activated an option to extend his present contract by a year. The goalkeeper’s current deal was due to end next summer though it is understood De Gea and his representatives are now working on the basis that the player who joined from Atlético Madrid in 2011 will stay until 2020. Had the extension clause in his contract not been triggered, De Gea would have been free to talk to other clubs in the January transfer window and possibly sign a pre-contract agreement. Lucas Moura relishes chance to shine at Spurs after being displaced at PSG

Brazilian is keen to make his point on Sunday against Arsenal and Unai Emery, the manager who froze him out at PSG Lucas Moura has described it as the worst seven months of his life and even now the speed of his descent from hero to zero under Unai Emery at Paris Saint-Germain feels mystifying. The Tottenham winger was an established PSG player when Emery came to the club for the 2016-17 season and he would make 53 appearances in all competitions for him, getting 19 goals – a career high and second only to Edinson Cavani in the club’s scoring charts. The former Arsenal and England defender is unveiled at the League Two club’s Moss Rose ground and is delighted to have the opportunity to manage Sol Campbell arrived a few minutes late for the debut press conference of his belated managerial career having overrun with his first full training session at Macclesfield Town earlier in the day. He apologised to those assembled in the McIlroy Lounge at Moss Rose, looked and sounded remarkably at ease in his new, humble surroundings and preferred to thank the club that has given him the opportunity rather than dwell on the many who did not. Liverpool need a midfield rethink to help end their continental drift | Barney Ronay

Jürgen Klopp’s moans in Paris should not distract him from the fact that his side needs a reboot At the end of Liverpool’s defeat in Paris on Wednesday night Jürgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel offered up a weirdly self-referential round of press conferences deep in the bowels of the damp concrete hulk that is the Parc des Princes. Mourinho has a point about young players – but he should trust them more | Eni Aluko

Youngsters today are not as ready for first-team action as they used to be. However José Mourinho should treat those who do break through, such as Marcus Rashford, with more respect There’s been a lot of debate this week about the difference between young players today compared to 10 years ago after José Mourinho referred to them as “spoiled kids” . It’s interesting because I do think things have changed significantly in terms of their level of readiness. Young players have always found it hard to break into the first team but those who did in the past such as Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Michael Owen were much more ready to make that step than those who are coming through now. You don’t see many 18-year-olds doing the same these days – Marcus Rashford was probably the last one to do so at a big Premier League club. Liverpool must beat the Italian side 1-0 or by two goals on 11 December having missed an opportunity to qualify at Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday. The surprising struggles of Europe's top goalkeepers

David de Gea, Thibaut Courtois, Marc-André ter Stegen and Manuel Neuer have all been unusually inconsistent this season By Martin Laurence for WhoScored The weekend threw up another series of shock results around Europe. Real Madrid suffered a humiliating defeat, losing 3-0 at Eibar ; Bayern Munich could only manage a 3-3 draw against Fortuna Dusseldorf , the bottom team in the Bundesliga; and Manchester United were also held at home against Crystal Palace. José Mourinho’s team are now a point closer to Fulham at bottom of the table than Manchester City at the top. The one upside for United was that David de Gea kept his first clean sheet in nine league matches. He pulled off a brilliant save against Young Boys as United progressed to the last-16 of the Champions League but it has been a tough season for the Spaniard in the league – and he is not the only big-name keeper who is struggling. Liverpool can still qualify despite hard lesson from Neymar and PSG

The finale may be how Liverpool like it – an all-or-nothing, death-or-glory Champions League decider at Anfield – but not how they want it. Jürgen Klopp lamented Neymar’s antics, the referee and Paris Saint-Germain gamesmanship but ultimately had only Liverpool’s lacklustre start to blame for another European away defeat. “A big step forward for us,” beamed Thomas Tuchel. Liverpool are in danger of finding reverse in the competition they cherish. Inspired by the infuriating but sometimes unplayable Neymar, PSG delivered a deeply impressive performance that finally lived up to their expensive ambitions among the European elite. They lost their shape and composure once James Milner halved a deficit delivered by goals from Juan Bernat and the world’s most expensive footballer but there was no disputing the merit of a victory that the French champions had to deliver. Christian Eriksen pounces to give Spurs crucial victory over Internazionale

Tottenham had to win and, as the second-half minutes ticked down and Wembley grew increasingly fraught, they came to crave a single chance; a shot at Champions League salvation. Internazionale had been obdurate and it was difficult to remember Spurs creating anything in open play after the interval. Was this the slow death of their hopes? One thing was plain: Mauricio Pochettino and his players needed something special. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2RlRvPc

Champions League roundup: Messi’s spectacular goal helps Barça through

• Barcelona beat PSV to confirm place in knockout stage • Napoli keep pressure on Liverpool with win over Red Star Barcelona ensured their place in the knockout stages with a 2-1 win over PSV in Eindhoven. Lionel Messi’s fired in a spectacular solo goal to put the visitors ahead shortly before Gerard Piqué doubled their lead with a tap-in. Luuk de Jong struck a late consolation. Marek Hamsik’s early strike set Napoli on their way to a victory over Red Star Belgrade that kept the Italians top of Group C. Dries Mertens added a goal either side of half-time in a 3-1 win, Mohamed Ben Nabouhane scoring for the visitors. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2P7Hwek

Tammy Abraham scores four as Aston Villa draw 5-5 with Nottingham Forest

The Aston Villa manager, Dean Smith, struggled to comprehend how his side failed to win despite scoring five goals at home against Nottingham Forest. Tammy Abraham scored four times as the hosts fought back from 2-0, 3-2 and 4-3 down but it proved in vain as 10-man Forest gained a remarkable 5-5 draw thanks to Lewis Grabban’s 82nd-minute equaliser. Mark Hughes’ official complaints reveal hypocrisy of a serial whinger | Barry Glendenning

Manager’s VAR anguish would be permissible if it did not entirely oppose his previous grumble over Southampton’s treatment Almost 20 years into his career as a manager, we finally appear to have reached peak Mark Hughes. Following Southampton’s Carabao Cup defeat on penalties at Leicester , he used his post-match interview to complain about a refereeing decision that had not gone his team’s way. In itself, that was not unusual – rarely a weekend goes by in which Hughes does not publicly lay blame for their many shortcomings at the door of officialdom. Long before Donald Trump developed a reputation for tediously ranting and raving about the perceived injustices repeatedly inflicted upon him by the Fake News Media, Hughes had earned one for railing similarly against referees. • Europa League match against Vorskla Poltava switched to Kiev • Vorskla: We have applied to play in Kiev and are awaiting reply Arsenal’s Europa League match against Vorskla Poltava on Thursday remains in doubt after the Ukrainian side said they do not know where the game can be played. Uefa decided on Tuesday to move the Group E game from Poltava’s Oleksiy Butovsky Stadium – around 185 miles east of Kiev – to the Olimpiyskiy Stadium in the capital owing to security concerns following the introduction of martial law . Politicians in the country this week approved a proposal to introduce martial law in areas most vulnerable to attack following the seizing of three Ukrainian ships by Russia. Chelsea players called in for individual Sarri meetings after Tottenham debacle

• One-on-one meetings held after ‘match without determination’ • Sarri critical of Kanté for ‘wrong’ reaction to bad Wembley start Maurizio Sarri conducted one-on-one meetings with his Chelsea players as he sought an explanation for a perceived lack of “determination” in the defeat by Tottenham , with the manager also critical of N’Golo Kanté’s reaction to the team’s slack start at Wembley. Chelsea, who can win their Europa League group with a point at home to Paok Salonika on Thursday, were overrun early on, trailed by two goals after 16 minutes and lost 3-1. Sarri was quick to offer a reminder it was his team’s first competitive defeat of the season after an 18-game unbeaten start, but, having seen the warning signs in previous matches, he was dismayed the same issues had flared again in such a key derby. Neymar, the great individualist of the age, gives less to provide more for PSG | Barney Ronay

The Brazilian scored PSG’s winner in perhaps his most effective high-profile performance since leaving Barcelona With Neymar the questions have always been along the same kind of lines. How far? How good? To what height can the broad wings of his own attacking talent carry him? At a slightly wild Parc des Princes, Liverpool lost an exciting, slightly fractious Champions League game 2-1 , menaced throughout by a star striker intent on posing two very different sets of questions. For the opening 40 minutes, Liverpool felt the force of what was surely Neymar’s most effective high-profile performance since his Barcelona days. This was followed by the beta version: a second half of circus play and indulgence on the ball, with Neymar tumbling to the turf like a tiny little Victorian fairy sprite lashed with a blow from the under-gardener’s rake; and beyond that the full range of attacking ego-ball. Dele Alli the intense, flexible emblem of Tottenham’s mental strength

Spurs’ special brand of nerveless resolve was on glorious display in the win over Internazionale – Alli represents its zenith When we talk about nerves, we often ascribe them the qualities of metal. They’re made of steel, obviously, and when things are not going so well they start to jangle, like a set of keys or a piece of taut piano wire. But what if real emotional resilience was less like metal and more like, say, pastry? What if the key to surviving pressure was actually to stay malleable, supple, even a bit soft? Spurs were within 10 minutes of flunking out of Europe here and might well do so for real when they head to Camp Nou in two weeks’ time. But thanks to Christian Eriksen’s beautiful goal – delivered by Moussa Sissoko, finessed by Dele Alli and slammed home by the Dane – Spurs are still alive in the Champions League . And in winning this game they showed nerves of pastry throughout. Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2Rn8oJi

Fan’s view: ‘As an Arsenal supporter in Kiev, it feels like business as usual’

As a regular on Arsenal’s European excursions, this may be the oddest trip yet but the locals seem to be carrying on as normal When you choose to come on a trip like this, one of the reasons is for it to be a bit of an “I was there” experience, but that wasn’t exactly factoring in the way the situation has developed. When we booked it felt like one that would be good to say you went to. I have been following Arsenal for European away games for years. I try to get at least a couple in every season. This has to be my oddest trip yet because of the uncertainty. Not knowing where the game will take place, plus the added layer of not even being sure it will take place, and the potential for war, makes it a very unusual type of football trip. Richard Scudamore’s £5m tip might blow over but resentment will linger | Marina Hyde

Gordon Taylor’s largesse has superseded the furore over the outgoing Premier League chief executive’s retirement gift yet this level of boardroom excess is a slap in the face to fans A friend once stepped aboard a super-yacht hired by a super-rich, and asked far more questions about how much it cost than I assume is regarded as polite. Naturally, such things are bogglingly, unimaginably expensive to rent – but it was amusing to hear that the tip is also mandatory. In the case of this boat, the tip was £38,000 per week. I was reminded of this as the Premier League clubs voted to thank outgoing chief executive Richard Scudamore for his service earlier this month, in the form of what amounts to a tip of £250,000 . Each. So a round £5m for a man who has been in post for almost 20 years, and who last year took home just the £2.5m salary and undisclosed bonuses. Joe Montemurro smoothes bumps on road to steer Arsenal to WSL summit | Suzanne Wrack

Arsenal’s Australian coach fixed a leaky defence then introduced ‘balance and management’ to startling effect How do you build a buccaneering team who sweep away all before them? How do you turn a team who suffer a 3-1 cup final defeat by invincible double winners into one who demolish them 5-0 in their next meeting to maintain an unbeaten start to a new season? Joe Montemurro’s three-quarter season in charge at Arsenal was about laying the foundations for just such a transformation. Working without expectations with a team laden with stars – not least four Dutch European Championship winners – but lacking direction, the Australian set about his task. The forgotten story of … 'evil' Football League test matches

At the end of the 19th century, the battle for First Division places involved unwisely scheduled post-season test matches As the 1897-98 season roared towards its final furlong, the battle to avoid relegation from the First Division was white hot. Seven of the 16 teams were in danger of being forced to endure the post-season test matches that pitted the top two of the Second Division with the bottom two of the First to decide the final make-up of the following year’s top flight. “However the final positions may be allocated there will be a finer set of test games this April than ever before,” trilled Sporting Life in February. It is fair to say they got that one wrong. By the time the season ended the league’s own president was declaring the tests “a distinct failure” and proclaiming that “the sooner we get rid of them the better”, while plans were made to gift the two losing sides promotion as a final apology for inventing the cursed system in the first place. Sol Campbell finally gets his chance to manage after years in the shadows | Sachin Nakrani

The former England defender has had to deal with rejection and said he would take an unpaid role. Now he is taking over at the Football League’s bottom club Back in July 2017, I sat down with Sol Campbell at an Italian restaurant off the King’s Road. I had interviewed him at the same venue six years earlier and, having maintained a line of contact with the former Arsenal and England defender in the interim, our latest meeting was designed to be nothing more than an informal chat on a warm summer’s afternoon. It came as a surprise, then, when Campbell used the opportunity to open up on his desire to become a manager. Normally reserved and a little withdrawn, he spoke like a man at his wits’ end . He had standing, qualifications and coaching experience but simply could not nail down a job, and such was his desperation to do so he claimed he would be willing to work for free. “I’m up for that,” Campbell said. “I’m itching to start, I just need a chance, even just an interview in which ...

'A message for my lovers': Mourinho hits back at critics – video

Manchester United manager José Mourinho was in a combative mood after his team’s narrow Champions League win over Young Boys. Despite qualifying for the knockout rounds with a game to spare, United’s performance was far from convincing, with Marouane Fellaini’s injury-time goal the difference. But Mourinho defended his record in Europe, saying: ‘I play Champions League 14 years, and I qualify 14 times. The two years I wasn’t in the Champions League, I won the Europa League twice.’ He also stood by his decision to drop star players Alexis Sánchez, Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku from the starting lineup, claiming those who had played ‘gave everything’ José Mourinho ‘relieved and frustrated’ after narrow Manchester United win Continue reading... from Football | The Guardian https://ift.tt/2QiSnHl

Fellaini to rescue as Manchester United leave it late to qualify for next stage

Manchester United have not lost the knack of pulling the fat from the fire in the closing seconds of a game. The stadium announcer had just confirmed there would be three minutes of stoppage time when Marouane Fellaini gathered a knockdown from Romelu Lukaku, turned as he held off Loris Benito and stabbed a low shot into the bottom corner. In doing so he turned the drabbest of scoreless draws into something marginally more memorable, not least because United’s late winner means they will accompany Juventus into the knockout stage. Both sides progressed from Group H as a result of Juve’s win in Turin – until Fellaini struck, United would have had to travel to Spain for their final game with only a three-point lead over Valencia. Agüero leveller in Lyon seals Champions League progress for Manchester City

In the end this was a fine draw for Manchester City considering how Maxwel Cornet’s second goal nine minutes from time appeared to have grabbed the win only for Sergio Agüero to equalise almost instantly. The bottom line is Pep Guardiola’s men are through with a game to spare. Still, all opponents should study how Lyon took the fight to England’s champions and came so close to another victory over them. City’s paper-thin rearguard were exposed as the forward raced in behind to restore Lyon’s lead – and this was the story of the visitors’ defence throughout. Leicester prevail on penalties as Southampton rue controversial VAR call

Be careful what you wish for. A few weeks after Southampton complained about the absence of VAR in the Premier League, Mark Hughes’s players were on the wrong end of a controversial decision via that very technology. Steven Davis thought he had scored a late winner for the visitors when he swept home in the 82nd minute, but Southampton’s celebrations were cut short after VAR intervened and judged Nathan Redmond had used an arm to control the ball in the lead-up. Champions League: Valencia unhappy with lack of VAR after Fellaini winner

• Marcelino: ‘If the goal featured a handball, you become angrier’ • Valencia lose 1-0 to Juventus, Real Madrid seal Group G top spot The Valencia coach, Marcelino, has bemoaned the lack of VAR technology in the Champions League after Marouane Fellaini’s winner for Manchester United consigned them to the Europa League. The La Liga club lost 1-0 at Juventus , but were set for a showdown with United at the Mestalla for a place in the last 16. But Fellaini’s goal, where the ball appeared to strike his hand in the build-up, left Marcelino longing for VAR, which has been confirmed for next season’s competition. Liverpool’s Klopp backs Salah to deliver as Neymar and Mbappé return for PSG

• Klopp says Egyptian forward has ‘clicked again’ after injury • Thomas Tuchel: both forwards fit and ‘will be in the line-up’ Jürgen Klopp was eulogising Kylian Mbappé, lauding the Paris Saint-Germain teenager’s potential to fill the world-class void that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo must ultimately leave, when he concluded, “He is not the only one.” The Liverpool manager had Mohamed Salah on his mind. The Egyptian has “clicked again”, according to Klopp. It falls on his team to follow suit on Wednesday at Parc des Princes. The challenge of delivering brilliance consistently was set to Salah from the first whistle of this campaign following last season’s haul of 44 goals. Klopp maintains the onerous responsibility has never consumed the 26-year-old but his initial form, while producing a similar return in front of goal as 12 months ago, was restricted. Manchester United must be grateful to David de Gea, says José Mourinho

• Goalkeeper pulls off marvellous save with score at 0-0 • Marouane Fellaini denies handball for winning goal Marouane Fellaini may have been Manchester United’s stoppage-time saviour but José Mourinho paid tribute to goalkeeper David de Gea after the narrowest of victoriesy over Young Boys of Berne. De Gea showed tremendous reactions to stop a deflected shot from Ulisses Garcia right on the line in the 70th minute, and Mourinho felt a save ratified by goalline technology might have been the crux of the evening. The former Liverpool and West Ham defender, who used to play for the celebrated Senrab youth team, has welcomed new facilities at London’s Hackney Marshes “It was a mud patch,” remembers Paul Konchesky. “You could even see the cows over the fence … I remember it was always freezing cold in the winter and you would be lucky if your match was on. PSG's Thomas Meunier: 'Champions League elimination would be a disaster'

The Belgian on why he thinks Liverpool face a tough night in Paris and winning the French league unbeaten is ‘quite possible’ It has been a memorable year for Thomas Meunier. The right-back helped Belgium finish third at the World Cup – scoring the opening goal against England in the deciding match – after a domestic treble with Paris Saint-Germain. And the success keeps coming. With a new manager, Thomas Tuchel, in charge, PSG have made a record-breaking start to the French championship, Saturday’s slightly underwhelming 1-0 victory over Toulouse, thanks to a super goal from Edinson Cavani, making it 14 straight wins. But despite all these positives, Meunier knows that one bad result could seriously change his outlook. Defeat against Liverpool at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday could spell disaster for PSG and their expensively assembled team. Combined with a victory for Napoli over Red Star Belgrade, it would eliminate PSG from the Champions League and leave them struggling even ...
